Good leaders must first become good servants.
— Robert Greenleaf
Greetings, Inspired Travelers!
Grab a cup of your favorite beverage and stop for a moment to ask yourself: How has leadership changed over the years? It's a big question and it may take more than one cup. Especially if you ask the second question: Am I making waves?
There was a time when leadership was a “my way or the highway” game and the tougher leaders acted, the more they were followed - or so they thought. And then, there was a shift. At InspirationInProgress we are grateful for that shift. And for all of the productivity, profitability and goodness it brings to the workplace. Why? Because in order to stay in business - and employed - we need to produce and we need to make a profit. And, in order for all employees to be happy and engaged at their workplace - where we spend more time than with our families - we need goodness. And all of that great stuff usually comes in waves, through momentum.
So, where does that leave leadership? Well, I believe - and I witness with my clients - that the most successful form of leadership for the 21st Century was defined years ago by Robert Greenleaf. Yes, it is the Servant Leadership model and you have read about it in these newsletters many times.
Greenleaf maintained that servant leadership, “enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and … creates a more just and caring world.” And those whose style of leadership is reflected in the above definition attest to its truth.
One of the reasons for the success of Servant Leadership is its power to reach beyond the activity and extend into the future. It is a style of leadership that is transformational rather than transactional. Step outside to the closest puddle and throw in a stone. Watch the ripples. See the effect that one little toss has on the whole puddle. It's not just the splash - it's the waves that are created.
As a leader, you don't always get to see the waves. You don't always know the ridiculously wonderful impact you are having on your business, your staff or the wider world. But trust me, people are listening and learning from every splash you make.
So, go ahead. Step into Servant Leadership. Make some waves. The puddles are waiting to be changed!
Be magnificent! Have an Inspirational Day!
