Greetings, Inspired Travelers!

In the current state of the world today, it is challenging to be in a leadership position. Meeting objectives, producing outcomes, building teams and creating an atmosphere in which people want to follow you are not easy when the climate often appears to lack integrity and ownership. But, through these pages, we have addressed these issues on a regular basis. And so, during the month of June, when summer hits its mark and we all hope for calm seas, I offer you the following:

1. Be the one people trust! Whether you are always on-site or work remotely with people scattered across the globe, your presence should invoke honesty and fairness in those you serve. While you may not be able to share all the information you have, especially what is held in confidence, your words must always speak the truth, as you know it. Otherwise, honestly, why should anyone listen to you – never mind trust you?!
2. Be the one who is accessible and approachable! Creating and maintaining meaningful connections with your team and colleagues is critical to leadership success. Remaining behind closed doors, being perceived as too busy to talk, prevents information from flowing in an intentional way, keeps you from being human and can result in a workplace where people do not feel supported. Otherwise, honestly, why should anyone listen to you – never mind follow you?!
3. Be the one who provides meaningful work! People produce better results when they are connected to a purpose greater than the self. Most managers ignore this fact and don't see themselves as helping others to see that purpose. Front line staff are often the most marginalized. Connect with them and make sure they see how they are connected to something important. Otherwise, honestly, why should they care about their work – never mind about those they serve?!

Leadership is not easy these days but, in all honesty, all you have to do to stand out is do that which others are not willing to do.

So – be honest, be accessible, be the connector to the big picture! Your people will relish working with you and others will be clamoring to be a part of the team!
