It's not enough to be busy. The question is, what are we busy about?

— Henry David Thoreau

Greetings, Inspired Travelers!

It is not often that leaders have the opportunity to slow down and self-reflect. But in the slower days of August, as summer winds its way down and vacation time is well used, we have the chance to regroup, self-assess and adjust. There are times when our teams respond a bit slower, seem a bit crankier, or daydream on a regular basis, and these changes are not necessarily due to the weather and impending fall busyness. At these times, their passion could be fading and, thus, their productivity falling.

What's a leader to do? Well, I suggest beginning with a self-check. Make sure you are not part of the problem. As the leader are you:

Providing meaningful work? When people believe that they are a part of the bigness of the organization and that their work is importantly linked to overall success, inspiration and productivity increase off the charts!
Making space for autonomy? The less control team members have over their work, the more discouraged they become. Feeling that they are not trusted is a big de-motivator.
Allowing realistic deadlines? When time is not balanced with energy and task, employees can feel overwhelmed resulting in people who give up because, “there’s no use even trying.”
Distributing tasks creatively? Most people want to use their creativity in ways that benefit the greater good and allow them to succeed with their strengths. Beware of always assigning the same jobs to the same folks. Mix it up!

Honest self-reflection is a much needed competency for leaders today. Take the time. Take the necessary changes. Then take a vacation – you've earned it!

Be magnificent! Have an Inspirational Day!
