If your emotional abilities aren't in hand, if you don't have self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you can't have empathy and have effective relationships, then no matter how smart you are, you are not going to get very far.

Welcome, Inspired Travelers!

I love spending time with my coaching clients because, while serving them, I always learn something. And, for that, I am grateful.

Recently, one of my dear clients shared that she was struggling with staying focused in challenging conversations and resisting the temptation to become “over-emotional.” It strikes me that she is not alone in this. And so, I offer you the following:

Emotions begin with the self, not the other.
Notice your behavior: What are you beginning to engage in?
Pay attention to your feelings: What emotions are triggering your reactions?
What script is running in your head: What's your emotional story?
Stick to the facts: not your assumptions or opinions, just the evidence.

We play a large part in the outcome of challenging conversations and, most times, our past and our egos have a starring role.

Take a breath, refocus, center yourself on how you are contributing to the emotional hijacking and then, release and move ahead.

This is challenging self-work but great managers and great leaders recognize that, without it, their roles, careers and teams will suffer.

Be magnificent! Have an Inspirational Day!
