Innovation is simply group intelligence having fun.

— Michael Nolan

Welcome, Inspired Traveler!

September is here and life is kicking into high gear. Summer vacations are pleasant memories and we are hunkering down to the busier rhythms of life and work.

As leaders, inspiring creativity and innovation are part of the responsibility and joy of accepting a leadership role. So — how do you encourage others to bring new ideas to the table, especially when the media is still filled with stories about a troubled economy? How do you keep your own creative juices flowing? It can be challenging.

Creativity flourishes in creative environments and it is up to us to construct the setting that will encourage and nurture the creative parts of our brains. Inspiration touches the mind, heart and soul and it is up to us to tap into the gifts of our co-workers and the passion they have for their work.

Here are some ideas to get you started, and if you would like to send some of your ideas to me, I would be happy to share them in future newsletters! There’s a wealth of inspirational resources out there and sharing them makes us all better! So:

  1. Have an “Inspirational Pot Luck” and have team members bring a dish AND an idea to share that would “feed” the team.
  2. Establish a departmental library of magazines, books and periodicals that focus on your industry AND related industries.
  3. Establish virtual discussion groups that encourage sharing AND building on the ideas of others.

Don’t forget the power of inquiry; ask your team:

  1. How do we take the ideas we have to the next level?
  2. What have you created that was actually fun?
  3. What is no one else doing that we could offer?

Take your team for a walk, send them a quotation a day to stimulate thinking, bring in puzzles that foster creative problem solving and, most important of all — encourage and expect creative conversations that will create a better future for you, for your company and for your customers!

Have an Inspirational Day! Be Magnificent!
