The great law of culture is:
Let each become all that he was created capable of being.

— Thomas Carlyle

Welcome, Inspired Traveler!

We are in the middle of our fifth snowstorm of the season here in PA. I cannot remember a winter where we have had so much snow so early on in the season. So, as I bundled up and headed out to shovel, again, my mind raced ahead to all of the other things I could be doing — besides shoveling. There are clients to call, coaching sessions to prepare for, the book to edit and, well, this newsletter to write.

But then, in the middle of those thoughts, a light of inspiration burst in and created a shift. I began to think about how lucky I was that I am still able to shovel, that I still have the ability to do this. And I thought of all those in this world who wish they could still wield a shovel and handle physical labor. For many, that ability has disappeared. I was overwhelmed with gratitude.

As leaders, are there gifts and abilities that are disappearing in those you lead because they are being ignored? Have you become so completely focused on the path you are walking that you have lost sight of the gifts, talents and abilities that surround you? It is easy to do. Deadlines loom, results are required and the needs of business never end.

We all need to shift. To shift into creativity and into the culture that we can help create by collaborating with those we serve and nurturing the gifts that are present. To develop the minds, hearts and spirits of those we lead is the greatest privilege of leadership.

As a leader, you don’t have to have all the gifts — you just need to recognize them in others and provide support and a safe haven for their development, along with the opportunity for your staff to grow into their full potential. By doing so, all will benefit — your customers, other co-workers and, yes, your corporation. Think of the gratitude that will surround you all!

So, to get to the heart of the conversation, here are some thoughts:

  • What are the gifts of the people you work with?
  • What talents do you have that you like to use?
  • What abilities does your staff have that remain hidden beneath the work day?
  • How can we all inspire each other to reach our full potential?

These are not easy questions and they demand some reflective time if we are to be able to truly support others in developing their strengths.

There are many who are out of time. You are not. Treasure it. Use it well.

Be Magnificent! Have an Inspirational Day!
