We are what we repeatedly do;
Excellence, then, is not an act
but a habit.

— Aristotle

Welcome, Inspired Traveler!

The new year is upon us and lies, waiting to be unfurled, filled with people, passion and possibilities! We need only step into it, claim it and commit to it. Say yes! While you know that I fully believe those words, you also know that I believe leading into a successful future requires some work and, as Aristotle reminds us, the building of good habits.

Building good habits is a two step process, in much the same way that learning and development often is; we must “unlearn” those habits that no longer serve us and then “relearn” new habits that are more in alignment with our goals and objectives. Only after the learning takes place can we adapt them as our own and habitually practice them.

Since this is the time of year for new beginnings and we are setting about making some changes in our lives, let me offer a few suggestions as you move forward leading your teams — and your life — into a new level of wholeness. Be careful of making mistakes we all make at some time; we often:

Substitute knowledge for application! Learning must be put into practice.
Substitute cosmetic improvements for real change! Deep change happens below the surface.
Substitute conversation for transformation! Talking about something is not transforming it.
Substitute technical change for holistic growth! It is the union of the head (intellect) and the heart (emotion) that allows the hands (body) to do the work.

As you develop new habits that fulfill your passions, open possibilities and develop your people, honor those practices that have served you well but now must be set aside. We are all the sum total of our experiences and the future is full of new opportunities for you, your organizations and those you serve.

I wish you a New Year filled with blessings, success and, of course, heaps of Inspiration!
