All limitations
are self imposed.

— Ernest Holmes

Welcome, Inspired Traveler!

What walls we build, what limits we set! All in the name of caution. And, in such times as these, caution can become the buzzword that limits rather than liberates, and restricts rather than renews. Are you and your team falling victim to believing the cautions of the day — to an extreme?

Now, I’m not talking about jumping into the pool without checking to see if there is water in it, but I am saying that sometimes we have to jump off the high board while others are trying to get in without making waves.

So, how do you prepare to take a calculated risk that will set you apart? The first step is believing in yourself and your team, and trusting that if you do the work you will be rewarded in some way with results. And, those results may not be what you expected. They may be benefits beyond your wildest dreams.

Next, you might want to keep in mind that the culture of an organization is its strongest part; it is the soul of the company. And, like most firmly established characteristics, it can be a blessing or a curse. So, here are some questions to help propel you forward:

Do you promote empowerment or micromanagement?
Are titles more important than actual ability?
Is communication open among all levels in the organization or is it hierarchical?
Do you embrace a style of Servant Leadership or Dictatorship?

None of these questions is easily answered with honesty, but all of them will serve to springboard your departments into a new level of growth, innovation and change. At your next team meeting, will you be brave enough to ask them — and then listen to the responses? Or, will you continue to try and not make waves, risking that others are jumping with great joy into the creative pool?
