We need people in our lives with whom we can be as open as possible. To have real conversation with people may seem like such a simple, obvious suggestion, but it involves courage and risk.

Welcome, Inspired Travelers!

I pose a deep question this month: Do you inspire trust in those you serve in the workplace and in life? As leaders, we know that we lead best when we serve those in our teams and departments. However, it seems as if every time we pick up a paper, watch the news or turn on the computer, we are witnessing the tragedy of betrayal in our workplaces. So, again, do you inspire trust in your daily operations?

There are many ways to develop trust and it might just be, arguably, the most important quality for a leader to achieve. For trust forms the foundation of relationships, and relationships in the workplace determine so much — productivity, loyalty, integrity and excellence. It is difficult to collaborate and build teams when trust is absent. And, if trust determines how deeply others believe in our leadership, then trust is, well, everything. And trust breeds more trust. So, here are some questions to help you reflect upon daily choices that can instill or weaken the trust placed in us by those we serve.

Sincerity: Are my words, intentions and choices in alignment with the highest good of all?
Integrity: Can my core values be seen in my leadership style and decisions?
Respect: Especially in times of stress, do others feel respected in their interactions with each other?
Fairness: Am I addressing the best interests of those I serve, or providing service to the highest bidder?
Humility: Am I serving those I lead, or am I serving the ego?
Valor: Do I have managerial courage to be transparent and do the right thing?
Reverence: Can I honor the excellence in others and put them ahead of the self?

It seems to me that if we, as leaders, can live a life of trustworthiness, the possibilities of success, growth and prosperity will become reality for ourselves and for all of those we serve. And what could be more fulfilling for everyone than an explosion of goodness, through trust?!

We will be speaking and training this month in New York City and in The Hamptons.
