Never separate the life you live from the words you speak.

— Paul Wellstone

Greetings, Inspired Travelers!

Words flow from our lips, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly and sometimes unwillingly. Language is how we communicate and, in all relationships, our words can result in many different outcomes. Sometimes those outcomes can affect our own careers in ways that we don’t realize until it’s too late. So, let’s be careful of the words we choose so that they don’t limit our growth and success. Be careful of the following:

“I can’t do that.” Whether we can or we can’t, we are usually right! Offer to check things out before immediately giving a negative response. Leaders are resourceful.
“That’s not my job.” How many times do we have to repeat that this is not exactly a stance of ownership?! If we are overbooked, ask for help or re-prioritize, but be careful of giving up! Leaders own the work.
“I’ll try.” Like Yoda said - “There is no try.” There is do or not do. This makes us sound non-committed. Leaders do.
“It’s not fair.” Well, unfortunately, the world isn’t fair. Re-frame, re-group and re-engage. Leaders offer solutions.

So, as Spring arrives and new projects grow, be wary of sending an unintended message that could discourage those you work with and derail your career. Sometimes we are nurtured by others, and sometimes we cause our own dry spells.

Be Magnificent! Have an Inspirational Day!
