Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Greetings, Inspired Travelers!

“What am I doing with my life? What does it mean to be successful anyway?” This is the time of year when we ask the big questions of ourselves - or at least we should. Don’t get me wrong; I think we should ask these big questions every day. That’s the only way leaders stay current, focused and relevant. But we should, at the very least, reflect on the big thoughts as we begin a new year of our lives on this planet. If we don’t, we end up living by rote, going through the motions - you know - like those people you know who don’t read this newsletter! But … I digress…

What inspires you? What fills you with awe? This past fall I visited my sister who is living in Switzerland as a result of her husband’s work. And I was the beneficiary of this move as I had the chance to visit a country I had never seen.

As I stood on the mountainsides of the Alps, I was speechless. Taking in the beauty, grandeur and, yes, the awe of creation, honestly made me connect with that which is so much bigger than the self. With a magnificence that defied the human condition. Awe. Admiration. True humility. And, aren’t these qualities that true leaders live by?

Dacher Keltner, the head of the University of California’s Social Interaction Lab at Berkeley, defines awe in this way: Awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something vast or beyond human scale, that transcends our current understanding of things. “…that transcends our current understanding of things” is the space that truly great leaders live within - or at least travel through on a regular basis.

So, how much awe do you make space for in your life and in the life of your team? When was the last time you stood with them, totally transfixed on the awe in front of you? Hmmm…Need some help getting into that space? Consider beginning the year by:

Putting down the phones, tablets and technology. Take your team outside and consider the beauty of nature that surrounds you. If you are in a city, find a park!
Gathering your team. Take a Walking Meditation break from the day.
Organizing a sunrise breakfast with your staff. Silently watch the sunrise, nourish your soul, then your body.
Treating your team to a few moments of music that creates awe. Go for the classics! What is more inspirational than Mozart? Even without being in the Alps!

If the only thing you look at are your four walls and the daily routine, how will you ever reach the inspirational bigness that you were created for? How will you ever run with the stars?

Be magnificent! Have an Inspirational New Year!
