Yesterday’s home runs won’t win today’s games.

Greetings, Inspired Travelers!

Well, we are one month into the New Year and it is off to a rousing - and politically controversial - start! While this is not a political message, we cannot ignore the major changes for all of us that appear to be on the horizon. And, even if change is not imminent, the drama surrounding it certainly is. So, let me begin with a BIG question: How much do you love your life? Yes, I said life, not work. Why?

Well, because our work is so much a part of our lives, and we spend so much time and energy trying to do good things, the impact on our lives by how we choose to spend our time is important. And choose, we do.

This is a time of year when choices are being made and many are selecting new places to invest their time, talent and treasure as they make their way in the world. So - if you don’t want to lose great employees, what should you do? Here are some of the most critical factors of retention in this new year:

Your team should want to work with you for a long time! Do they? Really?
Your work environment should have a fun factor - even if the work you do is serious.
Your staff needs equipment and information in order to excel. Are you providing it - all the time?
Each member of your team should feel valued - regardless of position.
As the leader, your staff needs appropriate and balanced work assignments. No dumping!
Do you inspire cooperation and community? Really?
As the leader, you must provide a safe space for people to work.
Department members are regularly shown appreciation for their work. This means you must do more than the annual holiday party! Really!
Great managers are not micro-managers. Trust your people. If you can’t - they might not be your people!

So, there you have it. Now, close your door, turn off the phone and seriously reflect: Are you really doing all you can do to retain your great employees? If yes, ask what more you could be doing. If no … get busy!

Retention is critical to your success and great talent will not settle for a second rate work place.

Be magnificent! Have an Inspirational New Year!
