Greetings, Inspired Travelers:

We have often considered the idea of employee engagement here in this monthly column, and this month I offer you a holistic approach as you begin the fall season — usually a busy one for all.

Are your engagement efforts activating all parts of your team members? Hmmm…

Oftentimes, engagement only focuses engaging employees from a couple of different perspectives. Why not try engaging the whole person?

Engage the mind! Critical thinking is imperative for success today and encouraging employees to change their perspective is a sign that you, as the leader, are willing to look at solutions in a new way. Hire them smart — use their brains!
Engage the heart! As a team leader, understanding those things that your team members hold sacred is a necessity. What brought them to your door? What part of the company mission do they connect with? How are they relating to the other team members? Hire their values — keep them connected to purpose!
Engage the hands! High performers are jazzed by their accomplishments — by what they DO. So, are you taking the time to ask them what they would like to tackle next, or are you just assigning the same-old-same-old? Hire their hands — let them do!

Engagement is not a one-size-fits-all initiative and it involves more than simply new projects and ice-cream socials. Get in the game! Engage the heart, mind and hands of your staff and watch your productivity and spirit soar!
