Some of the best deals
are the ones you don’t make.

— Bill Veeck

Welcome, Inspired Traveler!

October is a month when our To Do lists really come to life. Projects go full tilt in the realization that the end of the year is just around the corner. (OMG!) School is back in session and many of us, and those we lead, are juggling soccer and band practices. Houses of worship are re-gathering and beginning activities. Our To Do lists are longer than the paper they are written on.

As leaders, focus is a critical part of how we become successful. So, during this busy time of year, I offer you a different thought: How about making a Not To Do list?! How about listing all of the things that drag us down, sap our energy, are unproductive or inefficient, and committing — right now — to putting an end to them?! How would that change your work? How would that change your life? Ideas?

Things Not To Do:

  • I will not say “yes” when I am certain that I should say “no.”
  • I will not be too busy to listen to a needy employee.
  • I will not hold on to projects that could be delegated to another.
  • I will not place paperwork before people.
  • I will not be afraid to take a calculated risk.

Sometimes, as the quotation above says, the best deals are the ones we say “no” to; sometimes the best prayers are those that, seemingly, go unanswered. Part of the responsibility of leadership is to be able to take in information and challenges and then, through thoughtful reflection and inclusive discussion, discern the best course of action — or non-action. We can only do this if we are clear about our intentions and focused in our actions.

So, this month, make that list, do some thinking and be gentle with yourself. And then — go!
